IS THE UR18G-950 RIGHT FOR YOUR JOB?
The Universal Robots g-Series is not built to lift more. It is built to connect more at the tool. The UR18g-950 brings Ethernet, power and safety inputs to the tool flange, so a camera or tool connects at the wrist instead of through a long cable along the arm.
What Gen 7 Brings, and What Is g-Series Only
| Part | What it gives you | Works with |
| CB7 controller, TP7 teach pendant, PolyScope X software | More I/O, 3 gigabit Ethernet ports and the new programming platform | g-Series, e-Series and UR Series arms |
| Tool flange with Ethernet, power and safety inputs | Cameras, sensors and higher power tools connect at the wrist | g-Series arms only |
| SP7 Smart Panel (optional) | Teach at the tool with Freedrive and 3 programmable buttons | g-Series arms only |
If you mainly want the new controller, an e-Series arm can also run on the CB7. Choose the g-Series when your job needs the new tool flange.
Jobs That Need the g-Series
- Camera on the arm: The job streams high resolution video from an arm mounted camera back to the controller, for AI vision, inspection or 3D picking.
- Tight spaces: The arm works inside a car body or a cramped machine, where an external cable can catch or get damaged.
- Full use of g-Series features: The job uses the tool cable, tool power and SP7 Smart Panel together, so the features justify the investment.
Jobs Where the e-Series Is Enough
- An external tool cable causes no problem in the job.
- Straightforward pick and place.
- The camera is fixed above the cell, not mounted on the arm.
Why External Cables Matter
- Wear and noise: Cables along the arm can get tangled, get damaged and make abnormal noise.
- Limited wrist rotation: An external cable limits how far the wrist can turn. A tool connected at the flange has no such limit.
- Unplanned stops: A damaged external cable stops production, and replacing it needs a skilled person.
Good to Know
- Short tool cable: A short cable from the camera or tool to the flange connector is still needed. What goes away is the long cable along the arm.
- No air passage: The tool flange has no air passage. Pneumatic or vacuum grippers still need an external air hose along the arm.

UR18G-950 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the UR18g-950 used for?
The UR18g-950 is used for handling heavy parts and tools in compact work cells, such as machine tending, packing, screwdriving and vision inspection. It carries up to 18 kg within a 950 mm reach, and its tool flange has M8 power and M12 gigabit Ethernet for an arm mounted camera or powered tool.
What is the payload and reach of the UR18g-950?
The UR18g-950 has a maximum payload of 18 kg and a reach of 950 mm. The allowed payload reduces as the centre of gravity moves further from the tool flange, so check the payload chart in the techsheet for your tool.
Where can I buy the UR18g-950 in Malaysia?
You can buy the UR18g-950 from FA Controls Sdn Bhd, the official Universal Robots distributor in Malaysia since 2016, with offices in Puchong (Selangor), Penang and Johor. Email sales@fa.com.my for a quotation, a demo or an application check.
Is the UR18g-950 safe to work beside humans?
Yes, the UR18g-950 is designed to work beside people, with 23 configurable safety functions and compliance with TÜV Rheinland EN ISO 13849-1 and EN ISO 10218-1. Every application still needs its own risk assessment, because the tool, the part and the cell layout also affect safety.
How long does it take to set up the UR18g-950?
Typical set-up takes hours, not weeks, and Universal Robots customers report an average set-up time of only half a day. The full project time depends on the tooling and the application, and FA Controls supports you with installation and training.
Which controller and teach pendant work with the UR18g-950?
The UR18g-950 works with the CB7 Core, CB7 Core Compact or CB7 Core Compact 0.55m controller and the TP7 teach pendant, running PolyScope X. The TP7 comes with a 5 m or 12 m cable, and the arm connects with a Gen 7 robot cable of 6 m or 12 m.
Does the UR18g-950 support PROFINET or EtherNet/IP?
Yes, all CB7 controllers support PROFINET, EtherNet/IP adapter and MODBUS TCP. They also have 3 gigabit Ethernet ports, so the robot cell, the factory floor network and company IT can stay on separate networks.
Do I need the UR18g-950 or is an e-Series robot enough?
Choose the UR18g-950 when your job needs connections at the tool, such as an arm mounted camera streaming high resolution video, or a tool working in tight spaces where an external cable can catch. If an external tool cable causes no problem, or the job is straightforward pick and place with a fixed camera, an e-Series robot can be enough.
